MISSION & PHILOSOPHY

A Unique Learning Environment

The Little Green Schoolhouse Inc. is a unique environment that brings the pedagogy of early childhood development and learning into the 21st century, which also complies with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, Regulation s.46. We understand that each child is competent, capable, curious and rich in his or her own potential.  It is our mission to provide opportunities for all children to discover and meet their full potential, and to foster positive self-esteem and self-confidence as they begin their educational journey.

Our philosophy is that all children deserve to grow and flourish in a safe, healthy, nurturing learning environment. All children should also be provided with a strong foundation so they can grow into confident and independent adults, who have respect for themselves, others and the environment. The following key elements guide and define our philosophy and our approach to teaching and learning.

1. Nurturing the Whole Child: Physical and mental health and wellness
Healthy Mind - children being connected to others and being valued
Healthy Body - children understanding self-care through healthy eating and physical activity

2. Child Focused Learning: Developmental, Explorative, Meaningful
Engaging children’s own natural curiosity to explore the world around them through play and inquiry

3. Building a School Community: Children, families and educators working together in partnership
Nurturing a community of respect, acceptance, understanding, and compassion

4. Responsible Citizenship:  Understanding and supporting our local and global community
Taking care of our earth through eco-friendly initiatives and giving back to our community

As part of our daily mission and philosophy, we strive to support, encourage and nurture a passion for life-long learning. We set high standards for the emotional and social well-being, and intellectual success of our children as we adhere to the Regulations mandated by the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014. To further support our programs, we incorporate the Region of Peel’s Best Start Initiative, Early Learning for Every Child Today: A Framework for Ontario Early Childhood Settings (ELECT), the Ministry of Education's How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years, and the Kindergarten Program. We are also a member of The Association of Day Care Operators of Ontario (ADCO), keeping abreast of the latest news and developments in Early Childhood Education.

We offer programs that provide children with opportunities to learn through purposeful play and inquiry-based, real-life, hands-on experiences, which are supported within the positive influences of fellow classmates, parents, teachers, our community and the natural environment. Our inquiry-based approach integrates the learning expectations and outcomes outlined in the Ministry of Education’s Kindergarten curriculum providing a balance between teacher facilitated direction and child-directed exploration.

Our teaching methods and learning are influenced by Piaget's Theory of Early Childhood Cognitive Development, together with the philosophies of Reggio Emilia, Maria MontessoriFriedrich Frobel, and Rudolf Steiner. We therefore recognize and understand that each child is unique and that children develop through various stages, often at different times and when they are ready. Our low teacher-child ratios provide our qualified R.E.C.E. staff with the opportunities to program and plan for each child's individual needs, growth and development.

Here at The Little Green Schoolhouse we believe it takes a village to raise a child, and we encourage and invite parents and families to work in partnership with our staff so that together we can provide the best start for each child.
